IP-Rating

- An overview -

By its digits and symbols the IP (ingress protection) protection types define the application possibilities of electrical operating products. According to the VDE regulations the classification is directly made by the manufacturer. The following overview shall help you to find the correct protection type for your requirements.

Protection class

For providing electrical safety protection measures have to be taken which avoid that users could touch power leading parts of the lamps. One devides between 3 classes of electrical safety:

I

Protection class I
Tools belonging to this class contain one or more parts which are equipped with basic safety insulation and which need to be earthed in certain cases (3 wires).

II

Protection class II
Tools in protection class II are completely insulated by a special insulation. They do not require earthing. (2 wires)

III

Protection class III
The light fitting is operated with SELV (tension up to 42 V) generated by safety transformers or by batteries.
